The naming of approach charts related to RNAV and RNP can be quite confusing. Both RNAV and RNP approaches may appear similar, but there are variations in the chart labels. For instance, some charts used to feature RNAV(GNSS) RWY xx, while others showed RNP Rwy. Additionally, there used to be charts labeled as RNAV(RNP) approach.
But from 1st December 2022, you will only see the term RNP Rwy xx or RNP(AR) Rwy xx on the approach charts.
According to ICAO Circular 353, a change in the naming of charts was planned, and it has been implemented since the 1st of December 2022.
ICAO Circular 353 provides guidance for standardizing RNP chart names, aiming to enhance clarity and consistency in global aviation. The transition from RNAV to RNP chart naming reflects a shift towards performance-based navigation. RNP Rwy xx designates charts specific to RNP operations, requiring a defined RNP value for lateral navigation accuracy. RNP(AR) Rwy xx indicates advanced RNP charts, requiring authorization, training, and equipment. The circular promotes chart enhancements, improving pilot situational awareness, and benefits include reducing errors and enabling harmonized global navigation procedures.
